    Dear Bernie,
Thank you very much for coming out to Oklahoma State University tonight.
I am a Japanese senior student athletic trainer.
I just found out 2 days ago that my host dad (I was an exchange student when I was a senior in high school in Cincinnati, OH) died from alcoholic problem a month ago.
I got your message and really appriciate you doing this program for college kids.
I am so glad to know that there are someone like you doing this kind of program.
Again, thank you very much for coming.

If we had more student-athlete drug/alcohol meetings like that, there would definitely be a lot fewer mysterious “illnesses” those nights. Great job~we all loved it!

    Bernie,
This one’s not for the book but just to say thanks for what your doing. Its so rare to see people who really take such a big part of their lives and pour it into helping others and not just themselves. Also your story about your “little” brother hits close to home cause i grew up with and have an older (32) yr old cousin who has Aspergers. I know how much the little things can mean to a big and big hearted child. Anyways just saying thanks and wishing you the best.

Thank you so much for coming Bernie. You have quite the sense of humor which is hilarious. You seem like a fun guy. Your speech is great because everyone is right about how we do not pay attention to the usual old boring alcohol and drug speeches. But right away you came off as this cool guy that is funny and that automatically made us all want to listen to what you had to say.
I have had problems with many friends who want to drink and drive. This past weekend 2 of my best friends decided to go “booze cruising” and invited 2 girls to go with them. Turns out once they got wasted everything finally went wrong. My freind who was driving went off the road at 80mph and went down into a ditch, went up airborne out of the ditch and the truck landed nose first and flipped end over end 4 times. 4 times is what they think after investigating the scene. The engine block was out of the truck, battery in the highway, and so on. Basically the truck looked like a crushed pop can. What is even more crazy is that all 4 of them were ejected out of the vehicle as it was flipping. None of them died thank god, because it was an accident where 9 of 10 ppl would probably die. My friend Curtiss had a few minor injuries but is ok, my friend Matt can barely move his toes, collapsed a lung, and had a hole drilled into his head to releive the pressure. The 2 girls had it the worst but are alive and still in the hospital as we speak.
The thing that kills me the most is WHY DOES IT TAKE THAT MUCH FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN. Its like something very terrible has to happen to them, their family, or a close friend for anyone to change the way they feel about drinking and drugs. Ya know one chance is all you may get and that first chance everyone seems to take that does drink, they take it when they get behind the wheel and I only wish they could see what a couple of my friends looked like after that wreck, because if that wont change the way you feel i do not know what will. I think thats where a guy like you steps in to help people change the easier way. Your just like me, I do not say don’t drink. I just say do not drink and drive and do not do stupid crap. Have like a plan if your out drinking. least always get a ride. I cant so i am any better than a lot of people because i have drove while drunk. I have never been pulled over or even worse been in an accident that involved drinking. But through what i’ve seen people go through i taught myself a lesson and that i do have a lot to lose. why be stupid and risk all i got going. Thank you for your message is was very worth a lot of us students time. You save people and do not even know it. God bless you

    Bernie,

Thanks so much for coming to OSU and talking with the teams here! I enjoyed everything you had to say, and after hearing how close you are to your younger brother I felt the need to call my younger sister and try to just tell her how much she means to me. She has had her fair share of high school parties, and now that she has been accepted into a good university I want her to finish school and achieve her dreams. Your a funny guy with a great message, thank you!!

Howdy Bernie! Thank you so much for coming out to OSU and speaking with all the teams. You have a great message, an awesome way of delivering that message, and I loved that you interact with your audience! I went to an alcohol awareness show last year, but it does not compare to the show you put on tonight. Very funny, I couldn’t stop laughing! You are truly Awesome! Thanks for sharing your gift and message with us!

    Hey Bernie,
Tonight was cool, real cool, so cool I’d like just that tiny littly seam from the quilt so my jewelry can be warm…. loL!

What you’re doing is awesome. Don’t stop and always keep your chin up like you’re talking to your little brother, Shawn. Reliving that day your other brother died must be tough to go through each time you give a show, But know this: you gave more than one message when you came tonight. One some know and some may not – to athletes-anyone.

Besides giving us an Amazing Alcohol Awareness speech, you also let us remember the world is a lot bigger than just us. A couple months ago I had a scare of taking my life, I was alone, like your brother, it wasn’t with a gun, but, I thought, well, lets just say, I wanted out, away, to get away from letting everyone down. Somehow, why I dunno, but I prayed last second – God reminded me of the rest of the world he made for us.
My horse, my dog, my mom, veteran disabled dad, sisters, and my little niece and nephew – they are my world too.

You reminded the Athletes tonight, with the story of Shawn there are other amazing people to look out for and care about. The world is just too amazing to let ourselves go – how conceited are we then? When we are all we see?

Thank you keep it up – I know I heard you – I bet they did too.

Awesome show Bernie. I have a family history of alcoholism as well so I felt like I really connected with your story. I am so proud of you for staying sober for 21 years! I hope I run into you again sometime down the road. My family could really benefit from your story.

    Thanks so much!
