Dear Bernie,
I have spent 19 yeras in the military and your briefing at Randolph AFB was above all "Number 1"! Your message on the perils of letting alcohol control your life was right on point. More importantly, your message of hope and perserverence after hitting bottom touched me even more. I have never been that close to the "fall" but for the past few weeks I felt like I was getting pulled into a dark pit. A few years back, just before Thanksgiving, my infant nephew died. I was away on military duty and could not get back for the funeral; a sad reality of our missions at times. Two years ago this month, my brother-in-law took his own life (by gun) and it hit me very hard. I was worried about him, but did not speak up. Last week I learned a dear friend's grandmother is dying; she was like family to me when I was a teenage. It brought on an overwhelming saddness I could not shake. When you started your briefing, I wanted not to laugh. I wanted to hold onto my guilt, sadness, and pain. But I did laugh. And later I cried a bit too. But I felt better. I was able to see that even though I can't go back and change things, I can't wear that pain forever either. I already knew these things, but I needed someone to remind me. Your show, at that time, on that day was the best thing that could have happened to me. My thanks are not enough... just keep spreading the word. Keep touching lives. And most of all, keep making us laugh. It truly is great medicine.

Bernie,

First off, I would like to say Thanks for the outstanding show. The comedy is absolutely hilarious. Secondly, the story you shared with us was so heart touching. I couldn't imagine going through the same things myself. You are a truly couragous person, and a Hero to your Brother Shawn. I don't want to bore you, but I would like to share a short story of my own. I have a cousin named Phillip that is 22 years old. He still lives at home with my Aunt, because he has always been a little challenged. He doesn't read well, and only made it through the 9th grade. All of the family always has mean words about him when he's not around. However, Phillip is quite a large kid, so nobody says any of those things when he's around. He also has quite the temper. When I'm around Phillip, we are like brothers. I have 2 brothers of my own, but Phillip is just as close as either of my real brothers. Whether we're fishing, riding 4-wheelers, or just mowing the yard (having lawn mower races most of the time), we always have each other's backs. I would rather spend time with Phillip than almost anyone else in the family. He loves my son to death, and my son loves spending time around him. It made me really think about the way the rest of the family treat him sometimes, and quite frankly, it makes me pretty angry. I just wanted to share this with you becuase when you were talking about your Brother/Buddy Shawn, it made want to take a week of leave, drive to Arkansas, and spend time with Phillip for a while, just so that he has someone there that really enjoys his company. You are an inspiration, and I will be looking for a way to get my son, who is now 12, to be able to listen to you, if only the audio. I think the message is great for old and young alike. I would not have missed your show for anything in the world. You were Absolutely Awesome and I Thank You for the things that you do.

Congatulations on ur 19 years sober!!!!

Story was very much close to home. I also tried to help my older brother from drinking and driving. He had many DUIs and would always tell us "I know how to drive I've been drinking and driving since I was 16." Well on mothers day and at the age of 30 he lost control and his car flew right into the Tijuana River in San Diego where I just relocated from. He left behind 2 beautiful kids and died on his sons 11th birthday. If he would have heard your jokes he would have loved them. U really got to want help before someone can help you. I tried helping my brother since I was 12.
Loved your show inspiring and very funny.

P.S I was waiting on you to talk about Cali but you didn't good or I would have had to boo you!!!!! J/K LOL

Bernie,

Thank you so much for coming out to Randolph and being a true inspiration. It was a blessing to have you speak with us, and enlighten us in the most positive way. Your approach speaks volumes of how you are as a person, regardless of how you may have been in the past. You lived and learned like so many; however you choose to spread your knowledge. For this reason I am so thankful. May God continue to bless you and your family with good health, success and happiness!!!! Happy Holidays....

Bernie,
Your show today was incredible! As all of the blogs have said our normal safety briefings are rather on the 'dry' side. I wanted to tell you that 95% of my drinking was done before I turned 21 years old. I do not know why I did not become an alcoholic due to the amount of consumption, which was horrendous. But I gave up all alcohol in my early twenties and have never regretted it a day. Life can give us our own natural highs! Thank you for the love and caring that you show your family and the military through your shows. May God Bless You!!!!
