I am so glad you managed to turn your life around. I am the oldest of my family, and I know how hard it can be sometimes to be a brother. I just hope you have continuous success, and even though people still can make mistakes that does not mean someone cannot try to work higher.

I’m glad, too, that you had a message, laughs are fun, but I think its cool your sharing you story with others. it gives people something to think about, and rethink their decisions. Thanks Again. Have a good tour!

Very good show man, very touching and personal as well as universal and hilarious. I’ve seen what drugs and alcohol can do to someone, it was a deep reminder of why I’ve made the life choices I have.

Year in and year out I have heard the amazing story you have told and it has never grown old. I have told my friends that do not go to Duquesne about your act and how awesome the message is that you send out. God has really blessed you and has made you a role model for the future generations to come. For as long as possible, please continue to be the honest and real person that I have seen you portray on stage. God bless you and your family!

Today you gave a wonderful show. I really appreciate your message and the values that you have come to live by. I’ve lost a family member in that manner and I know how much it comes around to bite you in the ass and take a HARD look at the decisions you are making yourself. I hope that many people really listen to what you have to say and keep it with them. Thank you so much!

  30. 30 Samantha Carr

  31. 31 Jessie Bieniecki

Hey, just wanted to thank you for your time today and the stories you shared. It really touched me in ways that are harder to explain than most would think. Last year, at my high school, a good friend of mine was lost suddenly–without prior notice. It’s not the same story you shared with us, but has so many similarities that it is a little scary. The guy I am talking about was a senior in high school, absolutely amazing on the track team, even better on the football team, had a full ride into a wonderful college, and was overall just a sweet, nice, caring, and outgoing person. He never put things in front of his friends and always made a point to say ‘hi’ to everyone in the hallway. Then, out of nowhere, he was caught in a car with alcohol & some friends. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t drinking it~he still received the D.U.I. After that, his whole life changed–no scholarships, benched on the track team, and a permanent stamp on his record. No one saw it coming, no one thought it even possible for him to think of doing such a thing; but, unfortunately, he shot himself in his car outside of our local park and was still there when his best friend went to go find him…
You can’t even believe how much grief was put on the people of that school, especially for the ones who knew him well & never thought he would do such a thing. We, of course, grieved and left the moment in the past while the memories lived on. Matt, this guy I’m talking about, never gave himself the chance to change his life. He wasn’t the ‘party guy’ that went out drinking all the time, but hung out with enough of them that it affected his & everyone else’s at our school’s lives.
I just want to thank you again for your time and stories you shared earlier. It was appreciated in more ways than one & I will never forget the message you put forth to us today. Thank you

  32. 32 Amber

    Bernie,

Honestly, the only thing I can say is that you’re definitely one of the most influencial people that could ever talk to a class of freshmen college students. Your show today was great..

    Take care!

P.S. You should be really proud of yourself, you’ve become a much better person and a truley inspirational man.

  33. 33 Stanley Teprovich

I’ve been to a lot of different conferences throughout high school and I’ve listened to a lot of different motivational speakers, but honestly you have been the best I’ve ever heard. Great show and I look forward to hopefully hearing you again sometime. Thanks for coming to Duquesne.

  34. 34 Alexis Sergeant

You were awesome!!! I Loved your message, and especially how you came about doing it. My favorite teacher in highschool always said the best way to speak to an audience is to Show not Tell, and that is exactly what you did. Your act will really have a strong impact on my college years. keep up the great work!! thanks for coming to Duquesne!!! :-) :-)

  35. 35 Amy McDougall

Hey Bernie, you were awesome!! Thanks for all the great comments about Duquesne and for coming to talk to us! Loved the way you approached the topic..good luck with wherever you go next!

  36. 36 Max Murray

Once again, unusual and thought provoking. I enjoyed your act last year, and it was great to be able to be around to hear it this time. i truly applaud you for being able to get up and talk so freely and openly about your life and your mistakes (and your rewards too!). I thank you for coming again, and i know i’m not the only one who walked away without feeling like information was beat into us with a splintering fraternity paddle. Everyone can relate your act to their life in some way, which is what makes it so special, and so potentially inspiring.

  37. 37 Lee Plummer

bernie… the show is funnier every time i see it!

  38. 38 Mike Filippo

Hey Bernie! I really enjoyed your show! I appreciated your honesty, and I also admire how you managed to turn your life around. Your story really hit home to me because I know many people who are in recovery, and I also know someone who committed suicide this year. Thank you for coming to Duquesne! You really gave me and many others inspiration.

  40. 40 Marcia Jacobs

    Bernie,
I loved what you had to say! You brought to the table a very serious issue in a way that would inspire us to internalize the truth and make good decisions for ourselves. Plus, you had me on the brink of falling out of my seat because I was laughing so hard! :D Great job and thanks for sharing your story!
    God Bless

  41. 41 Courtney Becker

Wow. You were absolutely inspiring…probably one of the best speakers I have ever heard. I give you mad props =]=] Thanks for an amazing show!

  42. 42 Becca Hosier

    Bernie,

You were so inspirational and I really do think you got to a lot of kids today. I definitely don’t even want to start drinking after your touching story, mixed with quite a few laughs.

It’s sad that something so terrible had to happen for you to stop, but I think it’s amazing that you share your story to help other people maybe think twice before picking up a glass or drug or something.

Thank you very much, once again…and happy 19 years!!

    -Becca

  43. 43 courtney dearden

Bernie – your show was incredible! I really enjoyed it and I would highly recommend it to anyone else who might have the chance to go see you. The message that you presented really hit home and don’t ever worry that you’re lecturing to your audience. Having you come and talk to us made my entire orientation experience worth it…you’re a great guy who’s been through a lot and I respect you for being able to get up on stage and talk about all that you did with us. Thanks again and best of luck!

  51. 51 nicole parker

    Hey Bernie
Thank you for coming to Duquesne and making this orientation even more enjoyable. Your show humored, inspired, and helped everyone who attended.

  52. 52 Andrea Buckel

You put on a really get show. I was so surprised that there actually is someone out there sending out a message that can get through to people effectively. Aside from that, a lot of what you said was personal to me. I had a friend back when I was about 12 who was being abused by his father. When the abuse got so bad, he ran away and secretly lived at my house for almost a week. He finally decided to go back home, and the day he left my house, he commited suicide. I fully understand how it feels to lose someone that way, especially right after you had just tried to protect them. Your relationship with your other brother reminds me of the relationship between Ryan O’Reilly and Cyril O’Reilly on the HBO series “Oz.” It’s a little hard to explain it, but it was really cool to hear about a real-life version of them, where one brother is of average intelligence and the other is mentally handicapped. Finally, I understand how you feel about being so short. I’ve been 4’11″ since I was 13, so I haven’t grown in five years, and I never will again. Anyway, awesome show. I really appreciated everything you had to say. Thanks a lot for coming.

  53. 53 Katharine Sharer

loved the show, you did a great job, without lecturing

  54. 54 Amanda Burns
