I am in Little Rock, AR to hang with my agent Barbara Meyer of Admire Entertainment. Barbara is an amazing woman with almost 30 years of representing the biggest names on the college market(of which I do not qualify!)
From Dr. Ruth, to John Waters, to Judge Mathis, Bobby Lee, Kyle Cease even Ant, Barb has done it all. We signed a contract eight years ago with a handshake, and have never fought, argued or screwed each other out of anything. It is a relationship of trust and faith in one another. You have to have that to do what we do day in, and day out. It is an amazing story how we met in 1997. When I performed and competed on Star Search with Ed McMahon back in 1992, I was humbly and quickly defeated by a very funny woman and friend named Katsy Chappel. Katsy, in her loving way, pulled me aside after cleaning my clock with her 4.0 judges’ score to my 3.5, and tried to inspire me not to go hang myself of the Orlando Bridge! She said “Here Bernie, call my agent Barbara Meyer in NY. You are funny and she will book you at colleges”. I said thank you Katsy, and sheepishly put the business card in my pocket. Even in Katsy’s grandest moment, she reached out to someone who was feeling ‘less than’, and passed good will and fate to me. Years later in 1998, Barbara Meyer and I would go on to create ‘Happy Hour’, and perform to possibly more college and universities than anyone in this format of comedy and alcohol-awareness. SO, what appeared to be my biggest defeat on Star Search in 1992, turned out to be one of my biggest victories in 1998, derived from the kindness, of one Katsy Chappell. What we all have to realize, is that things are not always what they ‘appear’ to be at that moment. Plans are always at work even when we don’t get the things we think we wanted. They sometimes re-appear later in life, to all make sense and justify the initial ‘mis-interpretation’! I love you Barbara. I love you Katsy. Life is good. Go enjoy yours Peace…..Bernie
